Fiction and non-fiction

Yesterday Eli's mom, Bari joined us and shared her love of knitting and weaving.  She read Rainbow weaver,  inspired by a true story.   A little girl, Ixchel  wants to learn to weave but there is not enough thread so she  looks for other materials to use.

Bari donated a couple of weaving looms and lots of beautiful yarn.  During workchoice time we practiced using the looms

Today Ms Hove joined us, she brought a  selection of animal books for the children to look through and talked about fiction and non-fiction books.

Ms. Hove joined us for work choices.  Offering to read to those friends that were interested in learning more facts about animals.

QUESTIONS
Can you remember one fact we learned about black bears?
What did Ixchel use to make her rainbow weaving?

Enjoy Spring Break.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

A few friends came to school with tales of mischevous leprechauns that had played tricks and left notes for them.   Escaping the traps that had been set.  It sounds as though those friends that celebrate St. Patrick's Day had a lot of fun.

Both  classes  took  advantage  of  uninterrupted  work  choice time  to  explore many areas  of the  room.

Maxi wanted to work with Quadrilla which inspired some friends to join that haven't played before.  Quadrill is a marble game which takes patience as it is not intuitive and the children need to work with the pieces before figuring out how they go together.

Yesterday a group of friends played with the farm.  Allocating each animal a specific area.  Today we had the wild animals out, Farrah, Brooklyn and Grace worked together to group the animals by habitat.  Gorillas, Minnesota animals, ducks, frogs, ladybugs, zebra, giraffe.  A few snowmen even found their way to  Antarctica where the penguin lived.

Livio and Ren were two of many friends that chose to make a book.  Creating pictures and dictating the story to a teacher.  Transitioning into paper airplanes toward the end of the morning.

Jenna and Maxi made more pizza to feed their hungry classmates.  Jenna made individual slices of pizza each one with a different topping.  Maxi was very clear that his pizza had to have pepperoni on it.

Brooklyn and Anne learned how to draw their animal using tracers on the light table. Brooklyn decided she needed a grey marker to show the color of the animals fur.  While Anne decided she wanted to draw a dog using all of her favorite colors.

Friends were busy in dress up.  Charlotte was the mom, and she had a lot of children.    She told me she had to cook lots of food and wash the dishes.

At the end of the  morning we read the books that Ren and Livio made and shared items that friends had created before heading outside to enjoy the wet snow.

QUESTiONS
What sound does S make?
How many more S words do we need to get to 100?(clue we got 82)

If you have time could you check to see if you have any socks or pants that your child borrowed from PreK, we seem to have run out again.  Thanks!

The colors of us

Yesterday we finished mixing our skin colors using red, black, brown, white, and yellow paint.  We talked about how the paint swatches were close to our skin color but not exactly the same. Using the paint they  had more control when mixing just the right color that matched closely to their skin tone.  They had to make a lot of decisions.  How much paint to add? Which colors to mix together?  Is it too light or too dark?  And what do we need to do if it needs to be darker or lighter?

The children  came up with some great names for their skin color

Anne:        Pink powder puff
Brooklyn:  Pinkie
Charlotte:  Sunset
Eli:            Mustard and ketchup
Farrah:      Maple syrup
Grace:       Salty color
Jenna:       Mermaid
Kaia:         Cupcakes, chocolate and unicorns
Livio:        Paint
Lucy:        Milkshake
Max:         Bacon goodies
Maxi:        Pillow
Mila:         Strawberries
Ren:          Spiderman's web

Today we started painting our model magic self portraits.  At group time we took a closer look at our eye color.

We took another look at the book Shades of Black and looked at our eyes in the mirror to help us think about our eye color before  using a basket of glass beads  to find one that matched closely.

For storytime Max's dad, Seth joined us and read
