Thursday 8th October
Yesterday we looked at a page from Look-Alikes Jr by Joan Steiner. She takes everyday items and creates other objects out of them. On one of the pages we looked at a farm she made using pencils to create a fence and a blue jigsaw puzzle piece to make a pond for ducks. A great way to inspire friends in the invention center, and to continue our conversation concerning where our food comes from. Linking the video of the Farmer's market to our next video field trip after conferences. Mr Andrews will visit a Dairy Farm.
We had a conversation about what animals we would see at a farm
MAX: Sheep
LIVIO: Ducks
BROOKLYN: Ducks
JENNA: Pigs
ANNIE: Cows
LIVIO: Horses
MAXI: Horses
MAX: Bees
Why would farmers have bees?
CHARLOTTE: To make honey
Why do farmers have cows?
BROOKLYN: To make milk
Chickens?
JENNA: Eggs
LIVIO: Turkeys, but we can't eat all of them because if we eat them, they'll all be dead.
Inspired by our conversation lots of people wanted to play with the farm.
Students sorted the animals into groups, those that wanted to be in the water and those that wanted to eat the grass.
Lucy and Eva decided we needed to add pink and purple paper for fields of flowers.
There was a little drama when a bear tried to eat the ducks. Friends were not overly worried as there were more ducks on the farm. At one point I counted eight children working together in this one area. Negotiating, problem solving and learning to listen to others ideas.
At the end of the morning we read Bone Button Borscht another version of the stone soup stories. No stones in this story.
Friday 9th October
Today, during group time we reviewed our four Stone soup books and we discussed how the people in all four books wouldn't share at first but by the end of the book the people shared their food, and were happy.
LIVIO: Sometimes it's important to do things by yourself. Some food they shared, not all of it.
JENNA: A lot of people were giving food to them.
REN noticed a difference between the books: They put one stone in, but the other one, they putted three stones.
What's special about today?
MAX: Community day.
I explained that the people in our class are a Community and that we try and help each other and take care of each other. The class agreed that they helped each other.
REN: Yes! Just like Spiderman
ANNIE: I would help all of them (friends)
Everyone else agreed with Annie.
Dtr Yu visited the classroom to read a book to the class called this way, Charlie by Carol Levis and Charles Santoso. The story tells about Charlie the horse and Jack the goat and how they became friends.
Ms Lane joined us during work choice time and worked with our third group of friends to mix primary colors.
During work choice time Max and Charlotte decided to take a second look at all four of our Stone soup books.
We added new pieces to our construction box which created a lot of interest. There are plastic bolts, nuts, screws, nails, hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. It can be challenging to manipulate these items and takes persistence and resilience when things don't work out the way you expect.
Friends could choose to try and follow the instructions, like the car Livio worked on.
Or create their own design like Annie who created a shower.
Max created a car/helicopter/airplane.
We ended the day with Mr Andrews telling us chapter two of his Gunny wolf story.
