We spent most of our morning sledding at Gravity Hill. Enjoy the video.
At the end of the morning we looked at the calendar and discussed why we wouldn't be at school next Monday as it is Martin Luther King Jr. day. We read My brother Martin by Christine King Farris. I like reading this book as his sister talks about the trouble they would get themselves into and allows our students to see Martin Luther King Jr. in ways they can connect with him. He and his siblings played games and had fun just like they do.
Before reading the book I asked the class, Who is Martin Luther King Jr.(MLK)?
No one raised their hand
I asked do you know anything about him?
MAX: Somebody shot him
While reading the book I discussed the word segregation as meaning seperating people because of the color of their skin. Black and white children not being allowed to go to the same schools, restaurants, parks etc. They were not following the Welcome rule.
KAIA: Even when we are black or white we can all go together to play.
We will continue discussing Martin Luther King Jr. as well as other people in our family, community, and the world that we look up to over the next couple of weeks.
QUESTIONS
What sound does the letter C make?
Do you remember some of the games Martin Luther King Jr. and his siblings played?
