Anne's 5th Birthday and Community Day pizza

We got our journals out and thought of a memory from Spring Break that they could draw. Over the last two days we shared the memories  with the class giving each child the option of standing up and sharing or having the teacher read what they had dictated.

We celebrated Anne's 5th Birthday with the traditional blowing out the candle and while they ate their popsicles I read The true story of the three little pigs!

The wolf tells his version of the story, which is very different from the original version.

Which perception do you believe, the wolf or the three little pigs?

COMMUNITY DAY

We allowed the children to choose if they wanted to go out and play in the rain or play inside.  In the sand area children got to work so that they could make a river.  As you will see from the video clip it was a team effort.  Some friends chose to dig, some  carried water, while others decided to supervise.

Due to the interest in making and selling pizzas.  We made real cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza.  Making sure we had alternatives to cover dietary restrictions.

Grating cheese and spreading red sauce.

Carefully sprinkling the cheese and placing the pepperoni.

Everyone tried a slice and gave it a thumbs up.

There was excitement when everyone rushed to the window to watch a rafter of turkeys on the hill.

As it is National unicorn day here is a joke for you:

What do unicorns call their dad?

Pop corn!

If you look carefully through the photos you may notice students with sparkly horns growing out of their forehead.

QUESTIONS

What was different about the wolf's version of The Three Little Pigs?

What story did Mr Andrews tell?

Which Spring Break memory did you draw and share with the class?

How can you tell male turkeys from female turkeys?

What was the Question of the Day?

Check your child's backpack if you haven't already you will find their school photo's .

 Enjoy your weekend!

CREATIVE MINDS AT WORK

There was a lot of interest in lightsaber and sword making.  Rolling the paper can take patience and dexterity but with perseverance and a little bit of duct tape friends prepared to battle.

patiently lining up to get tape

Strong gross motor skills were on display.  Controlling their weapon so that it only came in contact with another weapon.

Livio noticed Ike had created a shield and decided he needed one to help during his sword battle.  Thank goodness for cardboard boxes.

The last couple of days friends have been playing bank robber.  Making money and hiding it so the bank robber can't steal it.  Today, Max decided to create a bank.   Using a cardboard box he wrote BANK on the side.  Now he needed to get the money.  In true Pre-K style we made our own using colored paper.

Ren decided to make a one hundred dollar bill so that he and Henry could go to Target and buy toys.  They found a box and placed a bullseye on the side using red tape.

Charlotte made Pizza.  She spent all morning carefully making the crust, sauce and toppings.
After making signs for her store and the money.  She handed me a ten dollar bill and agreed to deliver my pizza.  Great service and a tasty pizza.

At the end of the morning I asked the class to draw a memory from Spring Break in their journal.  The plan was to read another Three little pigs book but we noticed it hadn't started to rain yet.  We took a vote. Do we read the books then go out, or just go out.  Going outside won with twelve votes.

QUESTIONS
What was Question of the day?
What memory did you share from Spring Break?
What sound does the letter E make?

Ladybugs

This morning we continued our conversation about Ladybugs and read a book.

We looked at what they eat, how many legs they have and what eats them.

Max: If you pull them off something they die.
Kaia: They have big wings and polka dots.
Livio: They have yellow stuff.
Ms Lawrence asked what do ladybugs eat?
Everyone: Leaves.
Max: Things from gardens
Jenna: And bugs.
Ren: I know they eat grasshoppers, I think they do.
Kaia: Some ladybugs can be orange, yellow or purple.
Ms lawrence showed us pictures of ladybugs when they are babies
Garce: It's a cocoon
Max: They grow new skin in their cocoon
We looked at a picture of a newborn ladybug with no spots.
Kaia: It looks like an eyeball.
They was a image of a bird eating a ladybug.
Max: It's a woodpecker.

Livio, Farrah, Chloe and Harlan set up the farm.  Livio took charge of all the wild animals and attacked the farm.  Farrah placed the roosters on top of the farm to sound the alarm and warn the farm animals.

Mila: "The sun comes in here" pointing to the wall "And then" she moved the mirror to showing us how the  light appeared up on the ceiling.

Snack break

Before P.E. Ren's dad, Ben joined us and read

Benjamin celebrate his 9th birthday.  He loves his birthday so much he tries to extend the fun by re-wrapping his presents.  Then he moves on to wrapping the furniture in his home.   When it reaches his 10th birthday he realizes how he has everything he needs and is grateful.

After saying thank you to Ben for reading the story we realised we still had time to read another book before P.E.

We voted earlier today on whether we should start reading  the  Three little pigs or Goldilocks.  The Three little pigs won by one vote.

Each day we will look at a different version of the same story making note of what is the same and what is different in each book.  Over the next few weeks we will read fiction and non-fiction books about animals.  The cool thing about this book is that one of our students is studying pigs.

QUESTIONS
Who is studying pigs?
What items did Benjamin wrap up so that he could keep pretending it was his birthday?
What was our question of the day?

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY

I hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break.  Even though I enjoyed my break it was exciting to be back and see  the children.   They all seemed to have grown.

Due to the unusually warm weather students had the option of making a work choice in the classroom or on the playground.

Friends noticed how many ladybugs were on the windows in Prek and started to collect them.  By sharing with each other what knowledge we  already have about Ladybugs we found out that they have wings.   They are red or orange.  That ladybugs have a yellow stinky liquid and they like crawling on the window and ceiling.  They all agreed we should put them  outside.  We also found out which friends are OK, and which friends are not OK with picking up ladybugs.

Mr Andrews continued to call people over to paint their self portraits.  Brooklyn mixed the paint colors to create just the right color for her hair and lips.

The sand and water  area stays in shade throughout most of the morning and was a popular choice.  A few friends were making homes for the ladybugs.  While others were busy cooking.

It seems like such a long time since we last had the large building blocks out.  Anne is testing to see if the structure that she, Nora and Harlan worked on is stable.

Max, Ren and Henry added a few finishing touches.  Today it was more about the process of building rather than playing with what they had created.

At the end of the morning instead of reading a book I shared information about a girl called Bria Neff who is 13 years old and has been raising money for endangered animals since she was 8 years old.  We looked at some of her artwork and found out she has raised over $70,000 to help save endangered species.

QUESTIONS
What does Endangered mean?
Does your animal you are studying have the letter E in it?

Reminder about  blankets, and stuffies for rest time if they stay for the afternoon.
